An important first step in achieving success in school is to set goals. Use the following tips as you and your sixth-grader work together to set individual goals for the school year.
TALK IT OVER: Before helping your child set goals, have a talk about school life: Subjects your child likes and dislikes, areas in which he or she does well or needs improvement, rewarding school experiences, and so on.
SET GOALS: After you talk, sit down with your child and begin to set goals. Once you set the goals, don't forget about them! Post the finished chart where you and your child will frequently see it.
REVIEW GOALS: Throughout the school year, revisit with your child the goals that have been set, and talk about what progress has been made in meeting them. Congratulate him or her when goals have been met, offer encouragement and advice on how to meet the remaining goals. From time to time add new goals and remove those that have been achieved.
