Students' lives seem to be busier than ever these days. Many of them struggle to juggle their after-school activities and homework. Use the following tips to help your sixth-grader manage his or her time and activities.
LONG-RANGE PLAN: At or near the beginning of the school year, sit down with your child and list the after-school activities he or she plans to take part in. On the list note the number of days per week and hours per session each activity will involve. For example, will dance class meet three days a week for an hour each day? When you finish the list, estimate how much time your child will have left over for schoolwork and play. Revise the list as necessary.
SHORT-RANGE PLAN: A great way to help your child balance his or her activities and schoolwork is to plan ahead. Sit down with him or her once a week, perhaps on Sunday night, and talk about the week ahead. Use a calendar or the students planner to help your child make a schedule for the upcoming week. If it becomes clear that your child's activities are taking up too much homework time or free time, have a discussion about how to fix the situation.
